Preventing and Treating Anal Fissures

Anal fissures are painful!

They bleed, they itch, and they are plain pain. 

Though they are not serious, they are tough to endure.

So, here are a few simple tricks to prevent and treat nasty fissures. 

An anal fissure is a common but painful condition caused by a crack or tear in the anal opening. 

It is often caused by constipation, childbirth, or anal sex that stresses the opening of the anus.  Though it can happen to anyone without these conditions too, that’s rare!

A heavy diet, a sedentary lifestyle, and sitting in a place for long hours can cause a fissure. All of which you are currently doing is being locked inside the house! Testing your culinary skills, slouching on the sofa, sitting all day for WFH, and doing all the not-to-dos… Fissures can find a way to crack your anal opening.

While pain is often an overbearing symptom, it can often be confused with piles or hemorrhoids. Other indications that confirm a fissure include itching, stinging,  and bleeding.

The good news is that most cases of anal fissures are not serious and heal without treatment. Though, it might take 4 to 6 weeks to heal on its own! ( some cases need a surgical intervention)

Here are a few tips from my Ayurvedic books that might help you in speeding the process of healing. But remember, any fissure or pain that persists beyond 6 weeks needs a doctor’s intervention.

DIY Home Treatment for Anal Fissures

  • Try a warm Sitz bath for 10-20 minutes a few times a day. Soak your bottom in warm water, particularly after a bowel movement, to relax the anal muscles. You can use any tub you have at your house for this process. (Buy Sitz bathtub)
  • Apply Jatayadi Taila on the crack. This Ayurvedic oil helps in healing the cut and tears in the anal mucosa. Its antiseptic, antimicrobial, antipruritic and wound-healing properties reduce itching, burning, and irritation around the rectal region. (Buy Jatayadi Taila)
  • Try Triphala Guggulu. Its analgesic and laxative actions help in softening stool, alleviating pain, and preventing infection. (Buy Triphala Guggulu)

Tips for Preventing Anal Fissures 

  • Do not hold back your natural urge.
  • Take enough time to pass the stool but avoid sitting in the toilet for too long. 
  • Keep your anal area dry.
  • Cleanse the anal area with warm water and mild soap.
  • Add lots of fiber in the diet – Fruits, vegetables, wheat, and oats.
  • Drink enough water to prevent hard stools. 
  • Engage in exercise. Walk, jump, do yoga, and move your body.
  • Avoid spicy foods as they may worsen your symptoms.
  • Natural or Ayurvedic laxatives can soften your stool.
  • Gently clean the anal area after a bowel movement.

Diet for Anal fissures

  • Eat plenty of leafy greens
  • Choose lean meats and fish over red meat.
  • Add ghee and oil to your diet as they act as lubricants in your digestive tract.
  • Eat the complete fruit and not the juice.
  • Add Citrus fruits, amla, and lemon regularly.
