The most dangerous place in an Indian wedding is not the kitchen where giant vessels of sambar are boiling. It is not the stage where photographers keep shouting, “Sir, one more smile!” It is the round table occupied by four elderly ladies, each with a coffee cup. Before the bride has finished her first photo session, they already know the groom’s salary, why the bride’s uncle arrived late, which cousin has put on weight, whose jewellery is original, and whether the caterer’s gulab jamun is inferior to the one served at the wedding in Mysuru three months ago. Intelligence agencies call it human intelligence. We simply call it “just casual talk.” If Sherlock Holmes had been born in an Indian family, he would have retired early out of professional embarrassment.
The outpatient department is no different. Patients rarely enter my clinic carrying only their laboratory reports. They also carry other people’s stories. “Doctor, my neighbour had exactly this.” “My brother-in-law says thyroid tablets damage kidneys.” “Our apartment WhatsApp group is convinced this is vitamin B12 deficiency.” Sometimes I feel I should charge the entire neighbourhood, because by the time the patient reaches me, everyone has already had an opinion. Medicine then spends twenty minutes correcting a diagnosis that conversation made in three.
We dismiss gossip as a bad habit, a social nuisance or idle time-pass. Yet that explanation is too convenient. Evolution is a ruthless editor. If gossip truly served no purpose, it should have disappeared long before smartphones, apartment associations and family WhatsApp groups were invented. Instead, every generation—from cave dwellers to corporate employees—has rediscovered the irresistible urge to ask, “What happened next?” Perhaps gossip is not a defect in human nature. Perhaps it is one of its oldest survival tools.
Anthropologist Robin Dunbar asked a deceptively simple question. Why do human beings spend so much time talking about other human beings? His answer changed the way scientists looked at everyday conversation. Monkeys and apes maintain friendships by grooming each other. They patiently remove dust, insects and parasites from one another’s fur. But grooming works only in small groups. Imagine trying to groom 150 friends before breakfast. Agriculture would collapse by lunchtime. As human communities grew larger, hands could no longer maintain relationships. Words took over. Conversation became grooming at the speed of sound. The first social network was not Facebook. It was a campfire.
Picture a hunter-gatherer camp forty thousand years ago. There were no Aadhaar cards, police records or Google reviews. If a man quietly stole food, abandoned his companions during a hunt or refused to share meat after a successful kill, everyone needed to know. Equally important was knowing who could be trusted during a drought, who always kept promises and who looked after orphaned children. A tribe survived not merely because its members were strong, but because they remembered each other’s character. Gossip, in its earliest form, was not character assassination. It was character documentation. Long before we invented written history, we were busy writing invisible biographies inside one another’s minds.
Language may not have evolved merely to describe the world. It may have evolved to describe the people living in it. The first dictionary was probably a list of trustworthy neighbours.
Economists speak of money as currency. Evolutionary psychologists speak of something even older—reputation as currency. Human beings built banks only recently. We have invested in reputation for hundreds of thousands of years. A rumour attacks an asset that cannot be seen on an MRI scan yet quietly shapes almost every important decision of our lives.
Then comes an even stranger possibility. Some evolutionary scientists believe language itself may not have evolved primarily to discuss hunting strategies or the weather. Those subjects are quickly exhausted. People are not. Who is loyal? Who is cheating? Who is in love? Who is secretly forming an alliance? Such questions never run out of fresh material. Even today, observe any office cafeteria. Five minutes after lunch begins, someone says, “Did you hear about the new manager?” Instantly every head turns. Nobody announces, “Friends, let us now discuss the mineral composition of basalt rocks.” Human attention has always been magnetised by other humans. We often say language created civilisation. It may be equally true that civilisation gave language an endless supply of people to discuss.
This explains one delightful paradox. We proudly call ourselves Homo sapiens—the wise human. Yet a surprising proportion of our daily conversations revolves around people who are not present. Studies suggest that a large share of ordinary conversation is social talk about others, much of it harmless, some of it useful, and a small portion positively poisonous. Evolution never intended every whispered sentence to become malicious. It simply equipped us with an extraordinary radar for human behaviour because, in the ancestral world, knowing who mattered far more than knowing what. We often imagine that gossip is an accidental by-product of civilisation. In reality, civilisation may well be a by-product of our ancient obsession with keeping track of one another.
Our brains, it turns out, are chemical romantics. Every unexpected piece of social information gives the brain a tiny reward. Not because the brain enjoys scandal, but because it loves novelty. Evolution taught it that anything new about another human being might affect its survival tomorrow. A stranger entering the village, a hunter changing loyalties, a couple forming an alliance, someone secretly hoarding food—every fresh social update could alter your future. Dopamine is not whispering, “This is enjoyable.” It is whispering, “Don’t miss this.” That is why “You won’t believe what happened…” is neurologically more irresistible than “Here are the latest hypertension guidelines.”
I once saw a middle-aged gentleman whose blood pressure had suddenly become erratic. Every investigation was reassuring. No kidney disease. No thyroid problem. No hidden infection. As we spoke, the real diagnosis quietly walked into the room. Every morning, before brushing his teeth, he had already travelled through apartment WhatsApp groups, family debates and forwarded messages. By 8 a.m. his brain had survived half a dozen imaginary emergencies.
The brain also possesses another remarkable talent—status monitoring. We constantly compare ourselves with others, often without realising it. Who received the promotion? Whose daughter entered IIT? Who bought the larger apartment? Who was invited to the wedding? In moderation, this helped our ancestors understand where they stood within the group. The problem is that the Stone Age brain now lives inside an Instagram age. Earlier, a villager compared himself with fifty familiar faces. Today he compares himself with five thousand carefully edited lives before lunch. Evolution never anticipated high-speed internet. It expected only a slow village gossip under a banyan tree.
Perhaps the deepest reason gossip hurts is that the brain interprets social rejection almost like physical injury. Functional brain imaging has shown that being excluded or humiliated activates some of the very same neural networks involved in the emotional experience of physical pain. No wonder patients say, “Doctor, his words pierced my heart,” or “That insult still hurts.” Their nervous system genuinely registers social wounds as biologically important. Broken bones heal with plaster. Broken reputations keep returning for review, often without an appointment.
Memory, too, plays favourites. We remember people far better than facts. Ask someone what they learnt in a health lecture last month, and they may struggle. Ask them who quarrelled with whom during the lecture, and suddenly every detail returns with astonishing clarity. Our hippocampus stores stories because stories helped our ancestors predict human behaviour. As a physician, I have learnt that patients rarely remember the exact milligrams I prescribe. They remember the sentence I casually said while writing the prescription. “Doctor told me to stop negotiating with my sleep.” Facts educate the brain. Stories take permanent tenancy in memory. That may be the greatest secret behind gossip—and also the greatest opportunity for every teacher, doctor and parent who wishes to replace harmful rumours with unforgettable truths.
If an evolutionary psychologist quietly entered an Ayurvedic classroom, he would probably nod more often than argue. Evolutionary theory suggests our ancestors needed to monitor others because survival depended on social intelligence. Ayurveda asks a different question: what kind of mind is doing the monitoring? That distinction changes everything. Two people may hear exactly the same story. One quietly says, “I hope they solve the problem.” Another cannot sleep until twenty more people have heard it. The information is identical. The mind receiving it is not. Ayurveda would call the first predominantly Sattvic—clear, balanced and compassionate. The second is being gently hijacked by Rajas, the restless urge to keep emotional fires burning. Evolution explains why the matchstick exists. Ayurveda explains why some minds keep striking it.
Watch how rumours evolve, and you can almost diagnose the gunas at work. A Sattvic person asks, “Is this verified?” A Rajasic person asks, “Really? Tell me more!” A Tamasic person confidently announces, “I knew it all along,” before adding three details that were never part of the original story. Every rumour begins as a seed. Rajas waters it. Tamas fertilises it. By evening, nobody remembers who planted it.
The ancient Ayurvedic physicians also recognised something modern neuroscience is only beginning to appreciate. Every repeated thought leaves an imprint. Every repeated emotion becomes easier to reproduce. If a person’s daily conversations revolve around suspicion, criticism and comparison, those mental pathways slowly become the default setting. I have seen patients who complain that “people cannot be trusted.” After talking to them for twenty minutes, one discovers that they themselves have spent years collecting evidence for precisely that conclusion. Their mind has quietly become an algorithm that recommends only suspicion. We carefully choose filtered water, organic vegetables and fresh cooking oil. Yet many people feed their minds stale rumours three times a day and wonder why emotional acidity keeps increasing.
This is perhaps why Ācāra Rasāyana, Ayurveda’s remarkable code for healthy living, places so much emphasis on speech. It recommends truthfulness, restraint, gentleness, freedom from unnecessary anger and avoiding speech that harms others without purpose. Notice how revolutionary this is. Charaka did not describe these merely as moral virtues. He described them as rejuvenating practices. In other words, good conduct itself was medicine. Imagine prescribing this in a modern clinic. “One tablet after food, thirty minutes of walking, and reduce neighbourhood discussions to once a week.”
Then comes one of Ayurveda’s most profound ideas—Prajñāparādha, the mistake of the intellect. It is not ignorance. It is knowing perfectly well what is right and choosing otherwise. Every one of us has experienced that uncomfortable moment. Somebody begins with, “Please don’t repeat this to anyone…” Instantly another voice inside whispers, “You should stop listening.” Yet curiosity politely escorts wisdom out of the room and offers the visitor a chair. We forward the message, add our own interpretation for free, and later complain that society has become toxic. Evolution gave us curiosity because it once protected our ancestors. Prajñāparādha begins the moment curiosity stops serving survival and starts serving the ego. The fault, then, is not in our ancient brain. It is in the modern choices we make with it.
Today we have connected a brain designed for a tribe of about 150 people to billions. It is Stone Age software running on fibre-optic hardware. Every notification masquerades as a survival signal. We have never known more about strangers while paying less attention to the people sitting across from us at the dining table.
Fortunately, evolution explains our instincts; it does not imprison us inside them. The same brain that enjoys gossip is also capable of wisdom, restraint and discernment. The next time somebody leans forward and says, “I have something juicy to tell you,” perform a small clinical test—not on the speaker but on yourself. Ask, “Will this information make me wiser, kinder or genuinely safer?” If the answer is no, politely let the conversation die of natural causes. Every rumour needs two oxygen cylinders to survive: one mouth to speak and another ear willing to breathe life into it. Become the ear where unnecessary gossip quietly expires. Curiously, mental peace often begins not by speaking less, but by refusing free accommodation to every passing story.
Perhaps that is the real meeting point of evolutionary psychology and Ayurveda. Evolution gave us curiosity. Ayurveda gave us discernment. We cannot uninstall the ancient software in our brains, but we can choose which messages deserve to be forwarded from our ears to our tongue. Character is not revealed by the secrets we hear. It is revealed by the secrets that quietly end with us.
