10 Strategies for Maintaining a Positive Attitude While Fighting Illness

‘The wound is the place where light enters you’ – Rumi. Your wounds make you a warrior and your pain make you a survivor. All you need to do is sustain them with perseverance and positivity. So, here are 10 ways to stay positive even when you’re sick!

Positivity is pivotal for happiness and healing. It’s neither money nor materials but positivity is the key to happiness. It is the willingness of wellness blended with the power of belief that manifests healing. There are multiple studies that concur with this theory.

The sick who seek health should look in the mirror and see a healthy self. One who nags and begs about poor health attracts more of it. And the one who sees exuberance and energy even in their dullest days shall heal.

That’s why it’s very important to maintain a positive frame of mind even when the body is not at its best. Here are 10 ways to stay positive even when you’re sick.

10 ways to stay positive even when you’re sick

1. Don’t let your sickness reach your mind

Do not let illness define your mental well-being. The more you think about your sickness the more you will feel sick. You can be in pain and not suffer or at least not add to the external suffering with a “pathetic me” monologue in your head.

Keep your mind engaged in things that intrigue you and the day will pass just fine. Read a book, try creating some handicrafts, paint, or do whatever your body allows.

2. Meditate

Shield your energies with the daily ritual of morning meditation. Meditation is a proven method of protecting your mind and body against stress. It encourages positivity, boosts mood, and even quickens the process of healing.

Praying, chanting om and sitting in a trance too are proven to be effective in concentrating on healing. There are many pieces of research that prove the scientific basis of these spiritual practices.

3. Take Sensory Care

Visual, auditory, olfactory, and the normal senses that a person possesses are overwhelmed when you’re sick. All your energies are used in getting better, not filtering out. This makes it highly important to be in a tidy, clean space that smells pleasant (or at least clean), sounds peaceful, and looks nice.

Make an effort to clean the room or ask someone to do it for you. Try to maintain silence. Don’t strain your brain and eyes by binge-watching a series. Avoid speaking much and take a day’s rest.

4. Eat Good Food and Drink better

Eating healthy food boosts recovery and the mood of the person. It is a common question that patients ask me, ‘Sir what should I eat?’ And my answer remains the same, eat light food of your liking. When the body is busy healing you must not strain your digestive system.

Another important thing that you must do is drink a lot of fluids. Be it electrolyte water, plain water or juice. Make sure you stay hydrated and the body is able to flush the toxins out.

5. Look at Beautiful Things

The joy of life lies in the beauty around us. Anything that’s beautiful can brighten the mood. That’s why visitors often take fresh flowers to the hospital. The beauty and fragrance of flowers help in healing.

Going through old albums, looking back at fond memories, chatting with a close friend, and making sure you are getting good vibes only.

6. Take a bath

People often avoid bathing when they feel sick, not realizing that a simple bath can change their day. A warm bath makes the body feel fresh and light. It reduces pain and inflammation, reduces the levels of stress and anxiety, and improves the mood instantly.

If you are too old to go for a shower then opt for a sponge bath. Research says that bathing can diminish feelings of depression and pessimism. Bathing is a great combination of isolation, quiet, and comfort which also boosts creativity.

7. Change your clothes

Oftentimes, when people get sick, they roam around like zombies. Shabby clothes, hay-like hair, dirty bedsheets and a cluttered room. It makes you feel sicker.

Changing your clothes and washing your bedding is crucial for hygiene during sickness. Changing clothes also makes you feel fresh. Wear light comfortable but good-looking clothes. The better you look, the better you feel.

8. Stick together

It’s always great to have someone by your side, especially when you are sick. Laying on the bed alone all day can make you feel depressed bringing all the ill thoughts to your mind.

Call your friends or ask your family members to sit by your side. Talking, laughing, and sharing jokes will keep you distracted from the pain and ailment. They will also make sure that you eat at the right time and drink ample water.

9. Cry it out

While most of the people around you say  ‘Don’t cry’, I say ‘Cry it out’. Crying induces the process of catharsis that releases the repressed emotions thus making you feel light and relieved.

Crying helps to cope. Research says that crying helps in healing emotional trauma. It relieves stress and reduces pain. It is also proven that catharsis is very effective in treating anxiety, panic, depression, and insomnia.
