Health Benefits of Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate is a powerhouse of incredible health benefits. Loaded with antioxidant, anti-viral, and anti-tumor properties, the juicy fruit is a good source of vitamins, especially vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, and vitamin E. Pomegranate juice contains more than 100 phytochemicals and can lower the risk of all sorts of diseases. 

The pomegranate fruit has an impressive nutrient profile. It contains fiber, protein, vitamins, folate, and potassium. While it contains sugar as well, its powerful plant compounds have potent medicinal properties. Pomegranates contain two plant compounds that have medicinal properties—Punicalagins and Punicic acid. While Punicalagins are potent antioxidants, Punicic acid is the main fatty acid in the arils. It has potent biological effects.

Protects the body from free radicals

Rich in antioxidants, pomegranate juice protects the body from free radicals, which are responsible for premature aging. Free radicals usually develop in the body due to exposure to the sun and harmful toxins in the environment.

Protects cells from damage and reduces inflammation 

The fruit gets its vibrant red color from polyphenols. These chemicals are powerful antioxidants. So the juice contains higher levels of antioxidants than most other fruit juices. Pomegranate juice is known to have three times more antioxidants than red wine and green tea, which can help remove free radicals from the body, protect cells from damage, and reduce inflammation.

Acts as an oxygen mask

Pomegranate juice helps to pump oxygen in our blood. The antioxidants present in the fruit, reduce cholesterol and prevents blood clots. As a result, it helps free blood flow and thus improves the level of oxygen in our body.

Loaded with vitamins

Loaded with vitamins, pomegranate juice has more than 40 percent of our daily requirement of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps in boosting our immune system. In addition to vitamin C, pomegranate juice is also loaded with vitamin E. It is also a good source of folate, potassium, and vitamin K. 

Prevents common infections and viruses 

As the juice contains several vitamins like vitamin C and immune-boosting nutrients like vitamin E, pomegranate juice can fight off infections and prevent diseases. The fruit is known to be antibacterial and antiviral in lab tests. So it is being studied for their effects on common infections and viruses.

Prevents atherosclerosis

Due to our modern style of living, the walls of our arteries become harder due to cholesterol, leading to blockages. The antioxidant property of pomegranate helps prevent bad cholesterol from oxidizing. So, pomegranate juice helps remove the excess fat and prevents the hardening of the artery walls.

Improves digestion 

Pomegranate juice is said to reduce inflammation in the gut and improve digestion. It is seen to be beneficial for people with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and other inflammatory bowel diseases. 

Reduces inflammation 

Due to the high concentration of antioxidants, pomegranate juice has powerful anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce inflammation throughout the body. It can, therefore, prevent oxidative stress and damage. 

Prevents arthritis

  The flavonols present in pomegranate juice help to block the inflammation that leads to osteoarthritis and cartilage damage. Studies are currently being carried on to know its potential effects on osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other types of arthritis and joint inflammation.

Prevents diabetes

Traditionally pomegranate juice was consumed to prevent diabetes. While the fruit is still being studied to know the effects of pomegranate on diabetes, it is known to help decrease insulin resistance and lower blood sugar.

Prevents cancer

  A study found that pomegranate juice can help stop the growth of prostate cancer cells. However, the results are still preliminary to come to a definite conclusion. Pomegranate is also said to be useful against breast cancer.  Pomegranate juice may inhibit the reproduction of breast cancer cells, even known to kill some of them. However, the evidence is still limited to laboratory studies, hence more research is required before any such claims can be made.

Protects from Alzheimer’s disease

The high concentration of antioxidants in the juice helps it to prevent the progress of Alzheimer’s disease and protect our memory.

Improves memory

In a study, the subjects with memory problems were given 230 ml of pomegranate juice every day. After a certain period of time, a lot of improvement was seen in the verbal and visual memory of these people.
