Laryngitis is an inflammation of the voice box (larynx) from overuse, irritation or infection. Inside the larynx are two folds of vocal cords of mucous membrane covering muscle and cartilage. The vocal cords, normally open and close smoothly, forming sounds through movement and vibration. In this blog, I will be talking about Ayurvedic treatment for Hoarse voice or Acute Laryngitis.

What is Acute Laryngitis?

A person with laryngitis has vocal cords that become inflamed, changing the flow of air in the throat. This leads to a distortion in the sounds that are produced. It is characterized by a voice that becomes hoarse and sometimes can be too quiet to hear properly, almost undetectable. 

What are the causes of laryngitis?

  • Acid reflux, or GERD a condition where stomach acid and contents are brought back up into the throat
  • Bacterial, fungal or parasitic infection
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Excess coughing
  • Exposure to inhaled irritants like allergens or toxic fumes
  • High alcohol intake
  • Habitual misuse or overuse of voice
  • Smoking, including secondhand smoke

What are the symptoms of Laryngitis?

  • Cold or infection to the upper respiratory tract
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore or dry throat
  • Dry cough 
  • Difficult or painful swallowing
  • A feeling of fullness, tickling or rawness in throat
  • Vocal weakness or loss of voice

Ayurvedic treatment involves certain therapies with that act as herbal antibiotics, blood and lymph cleansing herbs. Sometimes, demulcent herbs which are an agent that forms a soothing film over a mucous and give effective relief. 

Home remedies you can try

  • Avoid decongestants because they dry out the throat
  • Breathe moist air with the help of a humidifier
  • Do not smoke
  • Rest your voice as much as possible. 
  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. 

A word of advice:

Moisten your throat by sucking on Ayurvedic lozenges, gargling with salt water or chewing a piece of gum. 

Avoid whispering as this puts even more strain on your voice than normal speech does.
