Acne can be distressing and annoyingly persistent. It heals slowly and when one begins to subside, others crop up. This is why acne leads to scarring of the skin and emotional distress. In this blog, I will be sharing some insights on Ayurvedic Treatment for Acne Vulgaris.

What is Acne Vulgaris?

Acne vulgaris is a skin problem when oil and dead skin cells clog up the pores on the skin. It is also called as blackheads, blemishes, whiteheads, pimples, or zits. When you have just a few red spots, or pimples, you have a mild form of acne.

Severe acne can mean hundreds of pimples that can cover the face, neck, chest, and back. Or it can be bigger, solid, red lumps or cysts that are painful. It is very common among teenagers and usually gets better after teenage. Some women who never had acne growing up will have it as an adult, often right before their menstrual periods. So, it’s a pretty common problem!

What causes Acne Vulgaris?

Our hair follicles are connected to sebaceous glands that secrete an oily substance known as sebum to lubricate hair and skin. When dirt, dead skin cells or bacteria block these follicles they bulges to form acne. Improper diet, improper skin care and using the wrong products can cause an imbalance in the sebum levels. At times acne can be hereditary too.

What are the symptoms of Acne vulgaris?

  • Reddish, tender, small raised bumps are symptoms of inflammation or infection. They are called papules.
  • Pimples that are red with white pus at the tip are called pustules.
  • Large, solid, painful lumps are called nodules.
  • Pus-filled and painful cysts beneath the surface of the skin, which can cause scars.

How Ayurveda can help?

Ayurvedic treatment targets the chemical reactions that cause Acne Vulgaris. It’s a deep-rooted approach. According to Ayurveda acne typically involves an imbalance in all three doshas, (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). It’s called Yauvana pidaka in Ayurveda. An Ayurvedic doctor will address each contributing factor separately to cure the problem. And this may take up to 3 months to get clearer skin.

I was facing this irritable and embarrassing acne problem for almost a year. My friends called me watermelon. It was so hurtful. Their jokes shaked my confidence and took me to a phase of emotional distress. Finally, I started to avoid meeting people and going out. Acne made my life hell!

My cousin suggested that I should meet Dr. Brahmanand and try his Ayurvedic treatment. He listened to me and prescribed a set of Ayurvedic medicines and asked me to follow a strict diet plan. I did as advised. The acne started to disappear gradually. Thanks to Dr. Brahmanand, I did not have to use any over the counter products that could leave a lasting scar on the face.
