Proper Chewing Techniques for Better Digestion: How to Chew Your Food and Avoid Blaming Arnab Goswami for Your Husband’s Digestive Issues

It seems that television has won the crown of the most interactive, indispensable member of the family. Whether it’s the thrill of a live match or the extravagant drama of today’s news channels, our life gets aligned with the timing of these programs. Children forgot to play in the outdoors and adults hardly share a chat, obesity has crept into society and imagination met its dead end.

That’s not it. The most common ritual in every home where they glue to the idiot box while munching on the food causes more havoc than one can ever imagine!!!!

Recently, a couple visited my clinic for general consultation. While the husband sat mute with a pleasant smile sketched on his face, his wife tried hard to narrate his case. 

She said in an irked pitch that her husband often nags about a pinching discomfort in the upper part of the abdomen and regularly complains of constipation. That’s not it!!! The whole family has to suffer for his troubles. The constant variety of burping and farting creates an utter embarrassment every time.

I probed further about his lifestyle. His wife revealed that he leaves home at 7 am in the morning and comes back at 8.30 pm. After toiling for over 12 hours he returns home roaring like a hungry tiger and grabbing and nibbling anything and everything that he could get his hands on.

After this, he gets glued to the TV watching Arnab Goswami shouting and screaming every day. He simply gulps down the dinner without even looking at the plate reflecting every expression on the T.V. This is his form of relaxation and as soon as the show ends his eating also stops. 

That was enough for me to identify the root causes of his troubles. Fast eating, non-chewing, and non-mindful eating are the culprits that are making him suffer. He has gained weight in the past couple of years and his wife pointed out that he bulged by 12 kilos in two years.

I explained to her husband that the chewing process is extremely important as it is the first step in the digestive process. The way you chew, including how long you chew, can significantly impact your health in ways you likely never knew.

I taught him the 4 steps to chewing properly

  1. Take smaller bites of food 
  2. Practice slow chewing 
  3. Chew until the food gets liquefied 
  4. Swallowing completely before taking another bite of food

Multitasking is good but only while you are not eating!!! I prescribed two ayurvedic medicines and 

I counseled him regarding his eating habits and shared many links, where he read multiple studies like Distracted eating may add to weight gaineating attentivelychewing, and constipation that proved the importance of mindful eating.

He was a man who believed in the facts and hence followed my advice religiously. In a few days, his woes waned and the weight started to slide down and the other complementary issues automatically took off.

Some of the key benefits of proper chewing

  1. Improved digestion: Proper chewing helps to break down food into smaller pieces, which makes it easier for digestive enzymes to break down the food further. This can lead to better absorption of nutrients and improve overall digestion.
  2. Reduced risk of gut problems: Chewing thoroughly can reduce the risk of gut problems such as bloating, gas, and constipation. This is because properly chewed food is more easily processed by the digestive system.
  3. Improved nutrient absorption: When food is properly chewed, it can be more easily broken down into smaller pieces, which increases the surface area for digestive enzymes to work on. This can lead to better absorption of nutrients and improved overall health.
  4. Reduced risk of certain diseases: Some studies have suggested that poor chewing habits may be linked to an increased risk of certain diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. Proper chewing can help to reduce the risk of these conditions by improving digestion and nutrient absorption.
  5. Improved mental health: Proper chewing has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health by reducing stress and anxiety. This is because chewing is a form of mindfulness, which can help to shift focus from negative thoughts to the present moment.
