In today’s life, we are always surrounded by a lot of noises. Silence and solitude are rare phenomenon in our life. Silence has a great significance on health. In this blog, I remind you the important lessons on, ‘Why we should eat in silence?’

Most people eat mindlessly!

With a phone in one hand and meal on another, they hardly see what they are eating. Men binge on the news while chewing their food. And for kids, gadgets have become the simple solution to healthy!

Eating in silence has some amazing benefits.

Why we should eat in silence?

1. Silent eating enhances weight loss 

Yes, research says, eating in silence can enhance weight loss!

The brain can track the number of food sensations that takes place. Eating becomes more tactical in the absence of noise. Smell sensation is more active as the auditory sensation of noise is not overloading the brain.

Due to less distraction, the satiety signals are sent from the stomach to the brain which is heard. Hence, eating in silence stimulates the process of consuming. It makes us conscious the amount of food you are consuming and this process can also enhance weight loss.

2. It decreases stress

When we are eating in silence we are detaching ourselves from the rest of the world. This lets us focus on the present task. Therefore, we forget our troubles at that moment and enjoy our meal.

Eating in silence helps to destress. Studies say it also helps in enhancing digestion. So, when your elders said, don’t speak on the dinning table, they had their scientific explanations! 

3. Provides proper nourishment

Eating in silence helps us to be fully present during meals which help to nurture ourselves. We can feel the actual taste of the food when we focus on it. 

4. Promotes mindful eating

When we eat in silence we focus on our food more and chew the food more, roll the food around in our mouth, study the food on the plate, etc.

Here are some simple tips to practice a mindful eating session

  • Before eating relax the body and mind with a few deep breaths
  • Send gratitude to the person or persons who prepare the food
  • Admire the food by noticing the shapes and colour
  • Breath in the aromas present in the meal
  • Chew slowly and thoroughly delighting in the depths of flavour
  • Give the time of a few minutes before moving to the next event
