Ayurvedic treatment for Anaemia

Dr. Brahmanand Nayak

Anaemia is a condition in which the quantity of red blood cells (RBC) is insufficient to meet the daily activities of people depending on age, sex, altitude, smoking habit, and pregnancy status. A severe condition can mean fatigue, weakness, dizziness and drowsiness. The most vulnerable people are pregnant women and children. In this blog, I bring you all about Ayurvedic treatment for Anaemia.

What is Anaemia?

Anaemia is a condition that develops when your blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells or haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is the main part of red blood cells and carries oxygen. If you have too few or abnormal red blood cells, or your haemoglobin is abnormal or low, the cells in your body will not get enough oxygen. Anaemia causes fatigue because organs don’t get enough oxygen to function properly.

What causes Anaemia?

Iron deficiency could be the most common cause of anaemia. Yet folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin A deficiencies, chronic inflammation, parasitic infections, and inherited disorders can all cause anaemia. Anaemia caused by blood loss, by decreased or faulty red blood cell production, by the destruction of red blood cells.

Red blood cells can be lost through bleeding, which can occur slowly over a long period of time and can often go undetected. This kind of chronic bleeding commonly results from the following:

  • Ulcers, haemorrhoids, gastritis (inflammation of the stomach), and cancer
  • Use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin or ibuprofen, which can cause ulcers and gastritis
  • Menstruation and childbirth in women, especially if menstrual bleeding is excessive and if there are multiple pregnancies.

Ayurvedic treatment for Anaemia

Anaemia treatment adopts a complete program after analyzing factors such as clinical features and pathogenesis. Diet, lifestyle,  herbs and herbal remedies are used to treat anaemic cases. In Ayurvedic medicine, the sign and symptoms of anaemic persons are clearly stated. The affected person loses his natural colour and it appears whitish particularly on skin, nails, tongue and eyes. The person appears lethargic, flaccid and exhausted. These conditions are present in anaemic individuals.

Home remedies for Anaemia

1. Beetroot and Apple Juice for Anemia – Take 1 cup of apple juice and 1 cup of beetroot juice and add 1-2 tsp of honey, mix well and drink.

2. Spinach for Anemia – Take half a cup of spinach, boil the leaves and add it in your diet daily. This dark green leafy vegetable is high on Vitamins A, B9, E and C, iron, fibre, calcium and beta carotene. It gives about 20% of the daily iron requirement for a woman!

A word of advice:

Consume 20 to 35 grams of fibre daily. To avoid bloating and formation of gas, increase your fibre intake gradually until you notice softer, more frequent bowel movements. Also, be sure to drink plenty of liquids when increasing fibre. Here is a list of food that is rich in fibre:

  • wheat bran
  • oat bran
  • whole grains, including brown rice, oatmeal, popcorn, and whole-grain pastas, cereals, and breads
  • peas and beans
  • seeds and nuts
  • citrus fruits
  • prunes and prune juice
