Anti-Aging Power of Coffee: Surprising Health Benefits of Sipping Your Morning Brew

Your morning cup of coffee always boosts your energy and metabolism on a daily basis. While coffee is widely becoming a common beverage worldwide, it is also gaining a reputation as an alternative remedy for anti-aging and skin aging—thanks to the antioxidants like phenols that help in fighting free radicals that lead to premature aging.

Recent studies have been showing that coffee in limited quantity is actually good for our health as it has the potential to reduce the number of health risks like type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver, colon, and prostate cancers, liver disease, heart disease, and heart failure. Studies have also shown that coffee can improve one’s cognitive function and mental health. US-based studies have also revealed that there is a lower risk of suicide among people who drank coffee.

Anti-aging benefits of coffee consumption

According to new research from Japan, coffee consumption offers anti-aging benefits and improves insulin resistance. The study by the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology and the Tokyo Medical and Dental University found that decaffeinated coffee led to an increase in locomotor activity, energy expenditure, and food and water intake in the mice, who were the subjects of the study. It was also found that their insulin resistance improved. The adenosine triphosphate levels that are associated with anti-aging also increased, while their plasma-free fatty acid levels decreased.

The study stated that caffeine provides protection from fatty liver disease and that coffee polyphenols are known to have antioxidant activity that prevents the oxidation of DNA, proteins, and lipids. If you drink three to five cups of coffee a day, you are 15% less likely to die prematurely. Caffeine definitely helps focus your mind in a positive way with very low negative side effects.

Coffee consumption has proven beneficial in numerous ways for older people when it comes to aging or age-related diseases. Coffee attenuated the fibrosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, heavy coffee intake decreased the risk for severe depression in middle-aged men and drinking three to four cups of coffee a day decreased mortality by 24% for 40- to 69-year-olds.

All these points out that coffee has substantial anti-aging effects that contribute to the prevention of age-related diseases. So, experts claim that the combination of antioxidants and caffeine makes it a perfect anti-aging solution.

Telomeres determine a person’s cellular age. These telomeres act as protective caps on each strand of DNA. The longer our telomeres are, the less our cells have aged. So, drinking coffee may keep our telomeres healthy and long. A 2015 study showed the association between coffee consumption and telomere length. The study found that higher coffee consumption is associated with longer telomeres.

Anti-aging effects of caffeine

The active ingredient in your morning cup of coffee, that is caffeine, is also known to have anti-aging effects. It is a powerful anti-aging substance. Caffeine’s benefits as an anti-aging substance are not only aesthetic but also linked to improvements in your heart health and lower risk of developing heart disease.

New studies show that caffeine consumption contributes to a longer, healthier life. Caffeine protects the body against chronic inflammation—a condition that usually happens as we age.

As we age, inflammation throughout our body increases, which is believed to contribute to diseases like Alzheimer’s, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and heart problems. A Stanford University study found caffeine’s effects on aging and inflammation. The study noted that many diseases that we associate with aging are actually diseases of inflammation. The study concluded that consuming caffeine helped protect the body against the effects of inflammation.

A 2012 study found caffeine’s role in lifespan. It suggested that caffeine can reduce insulin signaling, and cause people to eat less, and these are two important factors for a longer and healthier life. Since caffeine is loaded with antioxidants, it can play a role in slowing down the visual signs of aging.

Coffee makes skin look younger

Coffee could add to your routine of healthy skin. A study shows that Japanese women who drank coffee had significantly fewer pigmented spots—a mark of skin aging. Skin aging is caused by many factors including UV exposure and smoking. Researchers pointed out that the skin was protected from aging due to the plant compounds present in coffee, especially polyphenols. Polyphenols can modify the gut microbiome, and protect against oxidative stress, DNA damage, and UV radiation-induced inflammation.

Additionally, coffee is a mood enhancer. When your mood is good, you automatically look better.
