When Prescriptions Aren’t Enough

For ten years, she has walked into my clinic carrying more than her reports. Her thyroid numbers were obedient. Her life was not.

Three-fourths of every consultation dissolved into conversation—words circling the room, pauses heavier than prescriptions. Adjusting her TSH took weeks. Adjusting the weather inside her home took years.

She married, as stories in Bengaluru often do, with hope packed neatly into suitcases. She moved in with her husband and his widowed mother, into a house where space was measured not in square feet but in silences. Children arrived—one who now asks questions, another who still speaks in sleep.

She returned recently, ten years later, with her brother and two children orbiting her like small moons. The clinic grew loud. And then quiet. As always, the talk slid away from health and landed in marriage.

She said her husband is kind, mainly. But when the mother-in-law enters the sentence, anger follows. Words turn sharp. Hands follow when there are no complaints, peace returns, as if on a schedule.

I listened. Sadness has its own temperature. Violence has no excuse, ever. But I also knew her well enough to see the other half of the mirror. She is fierce, unfiltered, armed with honesty that cuts without checking who is bleeding. Some people bruise with silence. Others bruise with speech.

Life, I’ve learned, rarely chooses villains. It prefers collisions—two temperaments, two histories, trapped in the small geography of a household.

We like to believe medicine heals. Most days, it only witnesses. The body gets tablets. The story stays, waiting for someone to listen.

I have written a book.
If this blog spoke to you, the book will stay with you longer.
