ABC Juice Benefits: What Really Happens to Your Body When You Drink Apple, Beetroot and Carrot Juice Daily

Every generation discovers a new drink that promises to rescue it from the consequences of the previous generation’s food. My grandmother trusted buttermilk. My mother believed in fresh lime water. Then came wheatgrass, aloe vera, celery juice and a parade of green liquids that looked as though they had been squeezed directly from a cricket pitch. Today, the mixer grinder in middle-class Indian kitchens has found a new favourite. Apple, beetroot and carrot—ABC juice. Three vegetables and fruits that sat quietly in our refrigerators for decades have suddenly acquired the confidence of motivational speakers. In recent months, hardly a week has passed in my clinic without someone asking, “Doctor, what do you think about ABC juice? One gentleman even asked, “Doctor, should I drink it every day?” as though he were asking permission to marry.

Health trends are fascinating because they rarely begin inside laboratories. They begin in neighbourhood WhatsApp groups. Somebody loses five kilograms, another claims her skin has started glowing, a gym trainer posts a photograph holding a crimson glass, and within a month, vegetable vendors notice beetroot sales climbing. Research usually arrives a little later, wiping its spectacles, trying to separate enthusiasm from evidence. As a physician, I have learnt not to laugh at these trends too quickly. Most fashionable health drinks contain two ingredients. One is hope. The other is often genuine nutrition. The trick is knowing which one deserves the credit.

The first misunderstanding begins with the word “detox.” It has become one of the most successful marketing slogans of this century. Listening to advertisements, one would imagine that the human body spends its life collecting toxins like an Indian family collects plastic containers after buying sweets during Diwali. Fortunately, your body is far more intelligent than the advertisements give it credit for. Your liver works around the clock, modifying chemicals so they can be safely eliminated. Your kidneys filter nearly 180 litres of fluid every single day, recovering what is useful and sending the rest away. Your intestine constantly negotiates with trillions of microbes that help process food, while the lungs quietly expel carbon dioxide with every breath. Detoxification is not a weekend event. It is a full-time government department that has never declared a holiday.

Where, then, does ABC juice fit into this beautifully organised system? Think of it less as a cleaning service and more as a supply truck. The liver cannot function efficiently without nutrients. The intestine cannot keep its microscopic residents happy unless it receives fibre and plant compounds. Cells constantly defend themselves against unstable molecules called free radicals, and that defence requires antioxidants obtained from food. ABC juice does not march into your body carrying a broom. It arrives carrying bricks, cement and fresh paint so that the workers already inside can repair the house more efficiently. That difference is subtle, but it separates science from marketing.

The three ingredients have remarkably different personalities. Apples are the diplomats of the fruit world. They are welcome in lunch boxes, hospitals, temples and five-star buffets with equal ease. Their soluble fibre, particularly pectin, becomes a feast for beneficial gut bacteria, which in turn produce compounds that nourish the intestinal lining. Carrots are the dependable old schoolteachers. They have been introduced for decades merely as vegetables that improve eyesight, when in reality they contain an impressive array of carotenoids that support immunity, skin health, and cellular protection. Beetroot, however, refuses to be ignored. It stains chopping boards, fingers, kitchen towels and occasionally urine. Every year, I reassure at least a few anxious patients that their pink urine after eating beetroot is not a sign of internal bleeding but a perfectly harmless phenomenon called beeturia. Beetroot likes making dramatic exits.

Scientists became interested in beetroot for a reason that sounds almost unbelievable. Hidden inside this humble root are natural nitrates. Ignore the frightening headlines about nitrates for a moment because vegetables play by very different rules from processed meats. Friendly bacteria living on your tongue convert these nitrates into nitrites, which your body then converts into nitric oxide—a tiny gas that lasts only a few seconds but performs astonishing work while it is alive. It tells blood vessels to relax. Imagine Bengaluru traffic suddenly finding three extra lanes during peak hour. Blood flows more freely, muscles receive oxygen more efficiently, and the heart does not have to push quite so hard. Elite cyclists, marathon runners and even Olympic athletes have experimented with beetroot juice, not because it is exotic, but because sometimes the oldest vegetables silently outperform the newest supplements.

The apple contributes its own brilliance. There is a reason an apple turns brown within minutes of being cut. Most people think it is spoiling. In reality, it is protecting itself. The fruit activates enzymes that produce brown pigments, creating a natural shield against injury, rather like a scab forming over a wound. Inside your body, apples bring thousands of polyphenols that behave as microscopic bodyguards, helping neutralise oxidative stress generated by pollution, poor sleep, infections and even normal metabolism. We often search for expensive antioxidant capsules while walking past one of the cheapest and most reliable sources in the fruit basket. Nature has a mischievous sense of humour. It frequently hides remarkable chemistry inside ordinary groceries.

Carrots suffer from a public relations problem. Ask anyone why carrots are healthy, and the answer arrives instantly: “Eyesight.” Poor carrots deserve a better marketing agency. Their beta-carotene certainly supports vision by being converted into vitamin A, but that is only the opening chapter. Carotenoids accumulate in the skin, helping defend it against ultraviolet damage. They support immune function, promote healthy cell growth, and work alongside vitamin C from apples to help maintain collagen. No juice will erase sleepless nights, chronic stress or smoking, but nourishing the skin from within makes far more biological sense than expecting one expensive cream to negotiate with years of neglect. Your face, after all, is merely the notice board. The real meeting happens much deeper.

One of the unexpected pleasures of practising medicine for nearly three decades is watching simple habits outperform dramatic resolutions. I remember a software engineer who arrived every January carrying a brand-new fitness plan and every April carrying the same extra weight. One year, he did something different. Instead of trying to transform his entire life on a Monday morning, he made one small change. Every evening, when he returned home exhausted and reached automatically for a bottle of cola, he replaced it with a glass of fresh ABC juice prepared by his wife. Six months later, his weight had fallen modestly, his energy had improved, and, more importantly, the evening packet of chips had quietly disappeared from his routine. The juice had not performed magic. It had simply occupied the chair where an unhealthy habit used to sit. Sometimes the greatest nutritional achievement is not what a food adds, but what it gently pushes out of your life.

In years to come, ABC juice may be replaced by another fashionable drink. Good nutrition, however, has never cared about fashion. It has always preferred consistency.

Hi, I follow the ayurvedic way of eating and I wanted to know if it is okay to have ABC juice in the summers. Since beetroot and carrot are winter vegetables and they are heating for the body and may aggravate pitta. Please let me know. Thanks in advance

You can drink this juice on daily basis. It works best on an empty stomach. You can drink it about an hour before having your breakfast in the mornings.
